In late-2019, PMT YAS! Studio assembled its first competition team to participate in Musical Theater Competitions of America (MTCA), a nation-wide musical theater competition held in Southern California, and has competed annually since then. This year, for the first time, our competition season will include multiple local, regional, and national competitions and multiple performance opportunities, both at the studio and in the community.
Participation in the PMT YAS! Studio Competition Team is by audition only. Auditions will be held on May 22, 2023, 5:00PM, at PMT YAS! Studio in Friendswood (415 East Parkwood Avenue). The audition process will include:
Below is more information about the competition categories PMT YAS! Studio plans to enter; they include both ensemble and solo categories. Eligibility requirements apply for each competition category.
Participation in the PMT YAS! Studio Competition Team is by audition only. Auditions will be held on May 22, 2023, 5:00PM, at PMT YAS! Studio in Friendswood (415 East Parkwood Avenue). The audition process will include:
- MUSIC | Students should prepare a minute-long cut from a contemporary musical theater piece. Please bring sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. Students will also have their vocal range, music reading, and ensemble singing abilities assessed during the audition.
- ACTING | Students should prepare a minute-long, age appropriate monologue. If the student does not have a monologue prepared, they will be given excerpts from director-selected monologues for cold readings. Students should also be prepared to participate in group improvisation activities.
- DANCE | Students will be taught a brief dance combination. Please come dressed to move. Aside from learning a group dance combination, students will also be assessed on their general dance knowledge and technique.

COMPETITION ENTRIES
/ Group Ensemble Entries
The PMT YAS! Studio Competition Team will prepare 3 ensemble pieces for the 2023-2024 competition season. While specific titles will not be announced until after auditions, the musical revue piece will include excerpts from multiple musicals by the same composer (for example: the music of Andrew Lippa). The ensemble pieces will be 12-minute cuts from full-scale productions (for example: "Moana JR").
/ Vocal Solo, Dance Solo, & Monologue Entries
Solo entries are open to any student on the competition team. Selection of solo material should be in collaboration with the PMT YAS! Studio Artistic Team. Once solo material is selected, the student will prepare the material with the PMT YAS! Studio Artistic Team and must meet a minimum number of benchmark adjudications and live performance requirements. / Vocal DUET Entries
Vocal Duet entries are open to any student on the competition team. Selection of duet material should be in collaboration with the PMT YAS! Studio Artistic Team. Once duet material is selected, the student will prepare the material with the PMT YAS! Studio Artistic Team (separate from any recurring private lessons, minimum of 4 sessions).

/ Design Entries
Design entires are open to any student on the competition team. Selection of the specific show/characters should be in collaboration with the PMT YAS! Studio Artistic Team. In addition to group classes, scheduled with students and PMT YAS! Studio Artistic Team, students in this division should expect to spend a significant amount of additional time working on their design entries.
Categories of design include Costume, Hair & Make-Up, and Set. Group entries are allowed for this division.

REHEARSAL, TRAINING, & PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Competition Team rehearsals will occur weekly on Monday evenings, from 5:00PM-9:00PM. Rehearsals will begin on August 21, 2023, and will continue through early-February. There may also be weeknight evening rehearsals as we approach competitions, as well as summer and winter intensives. A full production calendar can be found at the link below.
Students on the PMT YAS! Studio Competition Team will be required to participate in weekly Creative Courses, specifically one dance course and one acting course. For more information about these classes and to register your student, please visit pitchmethis.com/creativecourses.
Students on the PMT YAS! Studio Competition Team will be required to enroll in PMT Lessons. Private lessons will focus primarily on vocal training with Eduardo Guzman and may also include monthly privates in acting and dance (4, hour-long sessions each month). Registration for PMT Lessons can be completed via your parent portal.
Students on the PMT YAS! Studio Competition Team will be required to participate in three (3) benchmark adjudications during the Fall 2023 Semester. Please refer to the PMT YAS! Studio Competition Team Calendar for specific timing and details for each event.
Students on the PMT YAS! Studio Competition Team will be required to perform a minimum of six (6) times over the course of the Fall 2023 Semester. The final Vocal Benchmark Adjudication of the semester will count as one performance, as will the Applause Awards Preview Performance. Students will be responsible for the remaining performances. Performances may take place at the studio as part of our regular programming or away from the studio. All performances must be approved by the PMT YAS! Studio Artistic Team.

LOCAL COMPETITIONS
/ Gold-Cup Junior Festival
The annual Gold Cup Junior Festival is an opportunity for students to put their hard work in private lessons to the test by performing for guest adjudicators and receiving constructive feedback, a personalized workshop, and an overall rating. Competition divisions include vocal, dance, and piano. Gold Cup is a qualifying festival and is required for participation in the All-State Festival. Students must receive a Superior rating to qualify for the state-wide competition.
The Federation Gold Cup Plan offers additional incentive to ALL entrants in the Junior Festivals Program. Cups are awarded on a point system based on Junior Festival ratings.

Texas Federation of Music Clubs (TFMC) is affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC). We have clubs and activities for adults (Seniors), Collegians, and kids (Juniors) as well as professional music teachers and social music lovers... TFMC benefits local, state, and national musical interests!
